Most folks use fishing line to saw through the double sided tape that holds them on front snd rear, use some Goo Gone to remove the adhesive residue.
There are two centering posts on the back of the front bowtie, but no screws, sounds like you have the wrong replacement parts.

If I were to put a different bowtie on an HHR, it would be with the current ones that all new Chevy's wear. They are so much nicer than the ones they put on our HHR's. They have more dimensional details and facets on the metallic gold centers than really sparkles nicely in the sun. I belief that the one from the front of a new '13 Malibu is close enough in size to work for the front of the HHR. and the one from the back of the 2010-2013 Equinox would work on the back. This is just based on doing quick corner to corner measurements at the Chevy dealership.

I use a blow dryer to heat up the trim and it comes right off. Doesn't take much heat. Then I use wd-40 or goo gone to clean it up.
