That looks like the same crappy one on my 2.4.
I believe it's official name is an oil/water heat exchanger.
I know the o-rings were a pain to figure out how to replace but was not that hard to do the job.

And you can't just bore and hone the cylinder walls if they are damaged. There is a liner that would have to be removed and replaced, can't be cheap.

Would a leak down test tell me anything ( not a compression test_ ) did not detect any contaminant on the dip stick --yes oil was low ,just barely showing on the dip stick -So I guess oil was getting in the coolant not vice versa --So I guess thats better than coolant in the oil -I can see where that could destroy an engine - Old Blue said this is pointing to a turbo seal issue --Or could it be pointing to an oil cooler issue as well -- P O had head gasket replaced approx 20k ago --110 k then --130 k now - so I doubt head gasket - Thanks for all yalls help ! would it make sense to flush all the gunk out of the system --replace the oil cooler --which maybe should be done anyway since this would be by far the least expensive possible fix

FYI. If you got the temp up that high, it has most likely done major damage. High temps warp or crack cylinder heads and gaskets.......even new head gaskets will be damaged by that high of temps.
There is no simple fix. If the turbo blew, it's not the cause of the overheating. That engine now has multiple problems. Time for a new engine.

Looks like the LHU/LDK engines are back in stock at ZZP. Wow, price has increased by $500 since I purchased, little over a year ago.

You gotta know!! Do you feel lucky.

you can flush the coolant and replace the oil cooler and there are bypass kits also.

put in fresh 50/50 Dexcool, fresh oil and filter.

If it runs and doesn’t heat up again, awesome, you dodged a bullet so to speak.

If it doesn’t, then you spent a little time to get that piece of mind. I probably would do the same thing.

I wish you lived closer , I help you do that test.

To answer your question, yes, a leak down test will show you where compression is leaking. A very effective tool.

It will tell you if you're leaking past the valves, or into the crankcase. If it's leaking into the coolant, you still won't know if it's a head gasket, or a cracked or warped head or block.
