Well here are your options,
Stage Kits with calibration are running in the areas of:
$510 for the crimp connection version 19212670 Cobalt, Solstice, HHR Stage Kit 19212670 Which I wouldn't recommend.... everyone that I know of who used the this version ended up having issues, me being one of them.
$613 for the kit with the adapters, Cobalt, Solstice, HHR Stage Kit 19212670HK
Then you will need to take the car to a dealer to have it installed and programmed. That price is all over the board, it cost me $450 I believe and at first it was hard to find a dealer that would do it. It was after prodding from GM Performance that they decided they would try it and they made me pay dearly for it.
Before the stage kits were around I had bought a tune from someone which included HPT to load it. As everyone learned about the tuning of the LNF we massaged the stock tunes more and more but the stock sensors were an issue. At that point GM came out with the stage kit with the 3 bar sensors. (You can find a lot of that information in the old posts on this board, more on the cobalt sites) I blew the stock tune back in and took it in for the upgrade. I was sadly impressed with the stage kit performance when I picked it up. The modified tune I took out was night and day different from the stage tune.
Also, what those of us that tune our cars have found is that the factory 2 bar tune has less nanny features in it than the stage tune has. That being said we have learned to adjusted the factory tune for the 3 bar sensors and modify that tune to our liking.
The sensors and adapters is ~$145
CED LNF Stage Kit CEDLNF1
And as I posted above the lowest priced version of HPT is $499, That version will do what everything you will need too tune your LNF, you do the math. There are people on this forum that can help you, me being one of them. There are number of other on the HPT forum as well.
If you are going to tune other cars with a Wide Band I would recommend the pro version since upgrading to the Pro version later is more expensive.
Now you decide...

cobaltss.net is a good site to find a good tuner:
Available Tuners & Locations - Cobalt SS Network
Available Tuners & Locations - Cobalt SS Network
Mod one = a TTR engine mount, to 'plant' the power
Mod two = a 'tune'
Mod three = K&N air intake system
Mod four = 'coring' the 2nd cat
Just these few mods & a set of slicks will get your 'buggy' into the 12s at the track
Hmm...
After 6 years of having the 3bar base stage tune, I really feel that whatever the 'nanny' features are, they are positive features, not negative , or harmful in any way. They probably have saved my 'buggy' many times, with me trying to 'push' the envelope with my some of my crazy 'tuning' ideas...

In some cases education is expensive.
Also, if the OP goes the sensor and HPT route the modification needed would be to his stock file since the dealer is the only person that get the stage files. That being said whom ever tunes it probably wouldn't put a kill tune in it anyways.
In your case you are probably correct. Some people that are using the non-stage file have indeed hurt there motors trying different things. Most has been pistons along with bent rods. There was a huge learning curve at first and sometimes things broke or got bent.

At the time in the spring of 2009, the GMPP stage tune, was the way to go, but now with good HPTuner software & Trifecta tunes, I would agree, & would
stay away from the GM stage tune. The GM tune itself is on the bad side, & was a 'rush' job, as GM was going bankrupt.
But if someone had a choice, the money, & doing the tuning, with help, or on there own, the stage base is the way to go...
