Did I ever do something DUMB tonight.....
Little bit different "Oops Story". Working on the grease rack at a GM Dealership, changing the oil on a Corvair convertible, while it is in the air I open the door and apply the sticker (remember when they were added to the door jam?). Forgot and left the door open, positioned the hydraulic lift to drop the car walked away to hand in the work order. The open door came down on the counter and when I came back the car was on a 45 degree tilt and just about to flip upside down into the next bay. Caught it just in time and surprisingly no issue with the door fitment. Built strong like tank in those days, but could have been awfully embarrassing.
WHOA!!!
I learned MANY, MANY years ago (from a real top-notch tech) to leave something out of place as a tickler that a "job" is not complete. For example......
While under the hood and performing mechanical work, leave a mechanics rag over the air cleaner or carb. (remember those days). Or a mechanics rag over the steering wheel if doing oil changes, etc. and called away for lunch or whatever.
It still is an automatic routine when I do MY oil changes. The first thing before exiting the vehicle, after driving the car on ramps or lift.......I place a rag on the steering wheel. I then start the oil change.
Although I must say.....many years ago....I didn't tighten a spin on filter correctly (piece of dust/dirt in the eye and got a clean rag to wipe it. Forgot about checking the filter for tightness, filled with oil and started car. Luckily I noticed the oil under the car right away!!! Lost MAYBE a quart.

Lemme tell ya, I think the dealership that does the oil changes on Eric's SS is more of a dumb ass....they put regular oil in, instead of the synthetic.
And the only reason why the dealership does the changes is they owed for the failing turbo gauge. So now the SS has 2 yrs of free oil changes.

Eh, dont worry about it....everyone makes that or a similar mistake sometime or another.....I have forgotten to remove the plug in my drain pan and put 6 qts of oil from the truck all over the driveway. Hopefully I wont make that mistake again.....

Similar story here. My buddies Fiero lost a engine. His warranty was through a Chevy dealer tha never changed a Fiero engine.
Well they dropped the rear drivetrain out but forgot to weight it down in the back. The car flipped on its nose then roof.
Well they did find a replacement car and it turned out to be not only better optioned but a better car.
I would have hated to been the guy though how dropped the car.
My wife has a Dodge Caravan Sport. I changed it's oil and filter awhile back. Started it up like I always do to see if the oil pressure gauge goes up and as always it does. However it then started to drop. I thought what the heck and turned it off. Looked under the Van and oil was everywhere, looked like it came from the filter. Jacked it back up, removed the filter and It had an extra rubber oil ring seal. Turns out the old filters rubber ring stuck to the engine when I removed the old filter and when I spun the new filter on it now was dubbled up. Filter did not seal and blew oil under pressure all over.
Turns out every time I use a Fram filter the ring comes off. I don't use Frams any more.

I sure did, when my wife came home, I was all happy to see her, told her I was almost done and be in shortly, you know I was thinking about a 4 letter word, that got me all excited and that was "FOOD" I was hungry for dinner, needless to say I lost my appetite, but only for a short time, had dinner first, and then went out and bought the oil
you are not kidding, Pep Boys did not have any 5W-30 Mobil 1 or either did Wal-mart, so there must have been quite a large oil spillage in my area.
BTW, my Pep Boys sells Royal Purple @ $8.99 a quart, but I don't know if you would really realize any difference with it, but I may try it next oil change....
It's funny you should mention leaving the plug out. I just did that on my SS for the first time in 35 years of changing my own oil. I did realize it just as I started to pour the oil in. Only lost about half a quart, but still felt stupid. As far as a shortage of Mobil 1 goes, I switched all of my vehicles over to Pennzoil Platnium a while back. Easier to find and has a better additive package. And it costs less.
