Do I need snows on my SS 5 speed?
Do I need snows on my SS 5 speed?
I Drive a lot and am having issues going up driveways and hills in the snow when I am completely stopped moving is ok. I have the 5 speed so keep that in mind. I tried 10 times to get up my boyfriends driveway in 1st and I tried another 5 times in his neighbor’s driveway when finally I fishtailed and made it up in the 4 inches of snow. I also got stuck in 8 inches of snow earlier and I couldn't get up the hill at the hotel and had to park it half way up. That was prob my fault because I was in 1st and shifted to see if it would grab better in 2nd but it started to slide backyards. I went to a tire dealer and call another and both said your tires only have 11000 don’t waste your money. I am not happy with the stock Michelin Pilots MS 225/45 r18on them especially when it rains I have take it easy on the gas. Someone told me I would benefit by putting on snow tires on but I don't know if I have to buy new rims or can I mount them on my wheels I have? I don't want my car looking like a fool and I don't want the rims all scratched up and I really don't have 500 for snow tires. Can someone suggest a good snow tire or a better all season for the front and is anyone else having this issue?
to the site!!! Do a quick search using the "Search" link above and type in winter tires. You will bring up multiple threads
Don't try to go up the driveway from a stop. I can't do that with any of my cars. Also, try disabling traction control when you are having trouble getting up an incline and see if that works better. Under normal circumstances the TC is a great thing, but if you are stuck, it often will help to turn it off.
I've found that just barly applying gas, and quickly shifting to 2nd - 3rd appliying as little gas as you can seems to keep it moving. Also if your stopping and think it's about to get stuck, floor it and the tcs will keep revs down , and it should pull out . The 5-speed is tricky in the snow and ice for sure. CAN'T WAIT TILL SPRING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No snow tires here and I live in Colorado and have had my 5 spd HHR for 3 years. Have you tried starting out in 2nd gear instead of 1st? The HHR is geared so low, that when it's a little slick out, that's what I do and it works great. I'm still running on stock 16" Firestone Affinity tires too.
That about sez it all, for those living in snow country.
I have been taking the truck to work when the roads get nasty, be it snow or icy roads. The standard tires of SS's are not made for winter driving (think it sez so in the manual and the Michelin website, or whoever sell them)
Hoping to get new tires this summer, and possibly goin with either new wheels on the summer tires and getting winter only driving tires on the stock rims, or vice versa. But if i go w/ snow tires n rims, it'll be the steelies or cheapest one for the winter.
