Engine Question
I have a "hypothetical" question.
If I were to buy a used HHR SS engine (2010 model year) as a spare, could it be used in either a manual or automatic transmission HHR SS? Apart from the obvious (automatic trans SS engine is tuned for lower hp, different engine mount, etc) are there any engine differences that would prevent it from being used in ANY HHR SS? Thanks Steve |
When I search for a 2010 HHR SS engine on car-part.com (auto recyclers web site nationwide), it shows 2008, 2009, and 2010 Cobalt and HHR 2.0 engines as equivalents.
It also doesn't ask what transmission you have (manual vs automatic). I could take that as an answer to my question. I was hoping to hear from other forum members to verify this before I spent any money. Steve |
The automatic had a different upper engine mount and upper rad hose but other then that they do swap out!
for the price of regasketing and new timing chain and water pump, consider an LNF or LDK from ZZP. |
I'm not so keen on the ZZP engine, due to the increased price. When I got mine(almost 4 years ago now!) It was $2,050. Now it's $4,000.

Whoa, that’s an increase! And still no new turbo. So it’s the salvage yard engine for sure!
|
The engine is from a 2010 HHR SS Automatic.
There were only a few 2.0L turbo engines available nationwide (according to car-part.com) and I haven't seen a local salvage yard that had one available. The lowest price I saw was $1699 for an engine with 171K miles (plus shipping from another state). This engine is at a local salvage yard and includes the turbo. It has 88K miles and the price is $800. For that price I'll keep it as a spare. I also took the automatic transmission, rear bumper, and intermediate steering shaft. The rear bumper is very hard to get, and the steering shaft is not available anymore. Steve |
What about the steering control module?
|
I could ask for it.
Anything else I should ask for? Steve |
Someone was looking for one a couple of days ago

The steering control module should be a part of the steering column assembly.
