SS has two pumps. A conventional intank pump, and a mechanical pump for the extremely high pressure needed for the direct injection

you didn't run out of gas did you? I know that if my 98 Z28 runs out of gas, the first thing that happens is the fuel pump burns out. A known issue. Don't know if it's true about the HHR, but it might be worth looking n2.

out of all the cars & trucks that GM builds I think that it is a very small % that fail. Running out of fuel or running it very very low will shorten its life.
I have also replaced pumps in all other makes ours & theres. What about the old fuel pumps that were bolted to the eng. they went bad too. must be all pumps are junk
I'm not putting down GM cause I have always and always will be GM but I do seem to see more GM products with fuel pump problems. All manufactures have fuel pump problems no dought. No matter what GM CHEVROLET all the way

A lot of cars have problems with intank pumps. Generally, the pump / bucket / sender assembly is made by third party vendors, like Nippon Denso. EPA requirements generally point the manufacturers in the direction of intank, returnless systems. The siphon / venturi inlet system on most of the GM fuel buckets are supposed to keep the pump fully immersed in fuel even when the fuel level in the tank drops below the top of the bucket. They work, sort of. It's still possible to overheat a pump and shorten its life by letting fuel get too low.
