hey 5speed guys...get in here!!!
One of the shifter cable blocks may have slipped out of the holder by the shifter. (Don't know the exact terms)
I removed the trim cover around the shifter and pressed down firmly on the the block like pieces where the cable comes into the shifter. They snapped into place and the difference is night and day.
My car would shift OK during normal shifts but when I got on it and shifted fast/hard the cable blocks would move, negating the shift.

The dealer looked at it and said that the cable is coming out and that replacing it would not fix it. but they did some "backyard mechanics" (their words, not mine) on it and I have not had a problem since. The cable stays in and the shift always is engaged.
Talk to the dealership about it, I had to take the service guy for a ride to show him. First time I brought it in they "could not replicate the problem". The second time, I drove it for him and there was no arguing and he agreed that I certainly was NOT beating on the car at all to replicate the problem.
Good luck to anyone having this problem.
I think this is the same that happened to mine. I would shift crisply, and it seemed the tranny was in limbo. The shifter was in position but the gear was not engaged. (mostly first to second, but happened once second to third).

when gearing down i find 1st gear tight to get in. as well 5th if your not doing highway speeds accelerating. gearing down in general does little to slow the vehicle. i just figure its all part of the break in.
i do find the exhaust rather loud for a off the lot no mods vehicle

I just got my SS 3 weeks ago and have just 1,000 miles on it. I noticed that the shifter really doesn't like to be "hurried". And going from 4th to 5th is incredibly notchy about 1 in 20 shifts. I just assumed that things might loosen up a bit after another month or so........
I know this is an old thread but thought I'd add my $0.02. I had the same problem and saw the picture here showing the cables. I never could find anything that looked like a lock for holding the cables in place.
With the cover removed, I could see the white nylon block(s) "pop" up and out of the slot during speed/spirited shifting. I didn't want to mess with the dealer so I just drilled a few holes in the side of the slots/supports and zip tied the blocks down. It worked great and only took a few minutes. Getting the cover on and off was the real challenge for me but I only broke one of the clips!!

Not having any problems shifting yet. It did take a while to get used to the wide spread between first and second gear. High torque steer has a negative effect on shifting the upshifting first to second smoothly. The engagement could be smoother, but i haven't missed any gears yet.
