hey 5speed guys...get in here!!!
I've had the same problem with sloppy, balky shifting since driving the car new off the dealer's lot. And it's getting worse. I would like to get a look at the condition of my shifter cables & clips before making a warranty claim.
Can yoyu explain how you get the access cover off?
Thanks
John
@ esmarkey - betting that the locking clip that's suppose to be there broke/came off or was never there. After a little wear, the white nylon cable blocks are popping up out of the cradle/slot and you get the "no second gear" condition. When you move the stick back to 1st, the white nylon block drops back into the cradle. Same applies the the reverse side white block/cable. Look at XXL's picture of the two cables side by side and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I could make mine do exactly what you describe with the cover off. My zip tie trick worked well and I haven't had a problem since.

I would love a photo of what anyone has done to correct this.
....
I believe the problem lies with the molded in connector in the console cavity. The white blocks should be held in place, but are "popping out".
I am taking my out of warranty car back to the dealer since I had them check on this while it was still under warranty and they couldn't duplicate the problem.... I suppose it is good that the technician couldn't duplicate it as he would have to "beat" on my car to get it to do it as it only happens when you are doing spirited shifting. I'm sure their insurance carrier wouldn't like it either

He said he could try to come up with a solution, but everything would be trial and error at this point.
If anyone else has come up with a permanent fix, could I get a detailed description and maybe a pic?
Thanks in advance,
It just has to be clamped down better.
I haven't had any problems with mine, so I have not looked at it up close.
Fabbing up some sort of reinforced bracket seems to be the answer. Either at the plastic block location and/or just in front of that where the cables hang loose. It just needs a firmer anchor point so it doesn't flex under stress and pop out of the weak factory holding bracket.

Shifter binding
I have not had the issue happen to me after my hurst shifter was installed. Took my hhr in for service for a rattle in the dash and after 3 times of them telling me it was my shifter and they messed my cables and adjusters all up, they fixed the rattle. It also helped me going in with my uniform, so I starting fixing it myself since most Chevrolet techs are not willing to spend the correct amount of time to fix the car right the first time.
I have since found that the cables allow a lot of adjustment and still give you good feel into the shifter. Just drove another 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0 turbo manual and what a unresponsive and lacking transmission set up!

Just a little follow-up for anyone having this issue (trans not able to go into gear during "spirited" shifting). I took out the coin bin in front of the shifter again and got my big fat hands in there and pressed down really hard on the white blocks that the cable go into. One of them made a popping sound when I pushed down really hard. I assume that this seated the block in properly, the way it should have been from the factory. I have not had any issues shifting since! I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is a permanent fix!!
