In the 1950's, Studebaker had a device on their manual transmission cars called a "Hillholder". When the vehicle was stopped on a hill, the brakes would automatically hold until the clutch was let out, then they released. The same idea is used on some present day cars such as Subaru.

It's really easy to do the same thing with the handbrake when necessary. I used to do it a lot in hilly downtown Seattle when starting at steep uphill traffic lights. Works great as long as you have a true handbrake (like the HHRs, as opposed to a foot-operated parking brake.
