Thank you, sir, for having more common sense than half of the "americans" in this country...

I am sure the other half of the "americans" with no common sense will come around once the domestic auto market stops building an inferior product.

Why do you say it's inferior? Or, worded another way, what would happen in 80,000 miles to a Chevy Malibu that wouldn't happen in a camry or accord? What have you experienced first hand? Or are you still basing your opinions on the 1980's when, yes, North American cars were having quality issues.

Guess what, cars are built to so much higher standards today than they were in the past. Whoever comes in 1st or 2nd for quality is insignificant because we're really splitting hairs...

I'm hoping the below chart shows up OK. I did an extensive comparison and guess what, between the Accord, Camry, Malibu, and Fusion... The differences are nearly insignificant. But you'll notice that for an equally equipped Malibu/Fusion, it comes out cheaper than the Accord/Camry. And guess what, you'll be able to put 100,000 miles on any one of those cars and have no major issues. And if you say othewise, you're just being ignorant and stubborn and unwilling to let go of 20 year old negative images...

I didn't go into the Kia/Hyundai because I don't have the time, and mainly what they do is morally wrong. I saw a TV commercial from one of them that bluntly sent the message "We don't invent anything. We're never the first to market with any feature. No Safety features, we had nothing to do with integrating IPods to car radios, we let the other guys spend all the money on R&D... and we just steal/modify their technology and sell it to you at a discount." Essentially they are admitting to being leeches on society... and yet the American public is STILL dumb enough to buy their cars!!? Amazing...

Why would you buy a car that is made overseas?? Get over yourself and your SELFISHNESS and support your local economy...
If you bought a Chevy HHR, then you bought a foreign-made car.

I live in Canada, so nearly every car is foreign-made! The Japanese and Europeans do build better cars, in many cases, but I did buy a HHR SS after testing-driving many makes/models. The HHR SS suited me best after much deliberation. I never looked at the fact that it was made in Mexico.

So should Germans only buy German cars?
Australians only Aussie cars?
Brits only British cars, etc, etc?

That doesn't make much sense. Build-quality improves with competition. Perhaps if more Americans bought cars that were better-built, instead of buying just because it is American (even though it was made in Mexico) the "big three" might just start building better cars to compete.

This thread started out pretty harmless. But its resurrection has brought out some posts that border on users trolling for a flame war.

This thread needs to get back on topic. Topic is Chevrolet HHR vs Hyundai Genesis.

For the life of me I don't know why we are trying to compare the two. But it seems to be a topic users want/wanted to discuss.

They certainly are different Animals.

Genesis: Low-End sporty/Muscle car. No real utility other than fun to drive.
HHR SS: Sporty Specialty Vehicle. Retro looks, big utility with cargo space for golf clubs, luggage etc.

Where do they cross? SS and Coupe with track pack have some comparable performance but are night and day different styling.

It's not about where the final assembly plant is located, it's about where the profit goes and origin of the parts being assembled. Even the vaunted US Hondas and Toyotas have a very high dollar content of imported components, and of course the profits all go to Japan.

So export of jobs to low-paying Mexico is OK? The profits to the company may increase (and stay in America), but the USofA loses high-paying jobs.

And some Japanese car-makers have plants in North America, but the company profits end up in Japan.

It seems like the "buy American" argument falls apart when you look at these facts...
