How do you manually turn with an automatic?

I'm working on another how-to, this time for shell blasting the intake valves. I realized I don't know how to turn the rotating assembly manually, if equipped with an automatic transmission. Do you really have to pull the timing cover and turn the crankshaft with a socket on the bolt? Does the valve cover have to come off, too?

Thanks, whoever submits the winning answer will be credited in the how to!! Think of the accolades!! The honor and respect that come with being mentioned in such a prestigious publication!!

The harmonic balancer has a bolt head. NEVER turn the engine backwards.

An automatic is always in neutral. Torque converter need RPMs to engage.

Don't know about this car but with another automatic vehicle while doing the timing I still had to turn the engine with a socket... I think all engines you would be doing that.

Turn the engine clockwise by the harmonic balancer bolt, it's a lot easier with the spark plugs removed
You should not have to remove the front engine or the valve covers

Thanks Donbrew. So you'd stand on the passenger side and turn it.... clockwise?

I'd have to kneel on the passenger side as I don't have a lift or hoist!
