You could pull the valve cover and inspect the timing chain, see if it's tight.

You could look at like: $100 spent on a $500 car makes it worth around $8000.

A loose chain can be stretched or a broken front guide.

This was both

Yeah dude they are recommending changing the chain because the chains and guides are a weakness in these motors. I've had to do mine twice, first the guide broke on the highway, then a year later the chain stretched and hopped a tooth.
It shouldn't be more than an afternoon job and $140 for someone with the tools and know how.

I get that's not what you asked for, but TOTALLY worth doing, specially since a broken chain can obliterate these motors.

I just had to replace the chain I installed last February, cheap chain kit from EBay, I got what I paid for.
I ordered the Cloyes 9-4201SA kit but for the SS I recommend the 9-4201SX kit it doesn’t include sprocket for the crank which is specifically for the LNF and the 9-4202SX balance shaft chain kit, but be aware you must reuse the crankshaft balance chain sprocket, it to is LNF specific , so you don’t replace the sprockets or pay for them and let them collect dust in your parts pile!

Nah, nobody mad here. If you'd rather spend $1,000s later, instead of a little preventive maintenance, that's your money, your choice.
