I have used K & N filters on many cars including my wife's BMW with no problems. A neighbor put one on his new Jag, and it had a failure that required a tow to the dealer. They would not cover the repair because he had a K & N, and showed him a factory bulletin on it. So the debate continues.

seeing how the MAF is on the eng side of the filter,I'd have to say you have an air leak ALLOWING dirt to enter TO collect on the MAF.I thought maybe this was something unique to the HHR's but maybe not,Since havn't heard of any other vehicles having this problem.Though I'm suspect of over oiling because not many really have owned these cars long enough to even warrent the 1st cleaningI(If your cleaning before 25k miles your wasting your time)! So,could there be a reversion problem on the non-SS models causeing PCV fumes to collecr there?Hmmmmmmmmm

what would you choose as a high performance "dry" filter for the SS?

I used the Amsoil EMA filter ( I don't know if they are the right letters) on my 03 SSR, and was quite happy with it, to my knownledge, they don't offer one for the SS yet!!!!

Well, I found a great price on the K&N ($38 US) so I decided to take the plunge. I will keep the group posted on how it goes.

I always found it funny how Ford would not cover warranties on their cars with KNN filters but they sell a oiled filter with many of thier Ford motorsports cold air systems.

I won't say all but most often problems are just due to over oiling filters by the owners. These filters take very little oil.

I have used them in the past and sell them at work. I have not had any issues with mine and seldom do we get calls on the ones many we have sold.

Only prob with people using K&N filters on mass air cars is they load up the filter and tiny droplets will hit the sensor on the mass airs. This was a know prob on the sti's.

One tip when you oil your filter is lightly oil it and then take a piece of paper towel and dab it dry.
