Key fob programming

Hi,
I have a 2010 HHR ss. The key fob only works about 2 feet from the car. I have done all the tricks that they have recommended on here, but still only works 2 feet away. Okay, every job that is typically supposed to be easy . . . isn't. I purchased a keyless entry remote Dorman 13736 because that is what it called for. The first one did not program, so I sent it back. Second one, same thing, will not program. I finally went to the locksmith here in town and he said, "If the FCC number does not match it will not program." My FCC number is KOBGT04A. I am asking if anyone knows if the locksmith is telling me the truth? I of course will be sending this back to Amazon and getting a refund, but if the locksmith is being honest this needs to be told to EVERYONE. I will be going to the locksmith and getting new programmed key fobs after my refund. Thanks.

I haven’t heard of the FCC numbers, I be not seen anyone have a problem programming Dorman fobs to their HHR.
However , which fob replacement did you order? And which OEM fob did your SS have?
Does your SS have remote start? With the 4 button fob?
or is it a 5 speed manual with the 3 button fob

2 other possible reasons come to mind.

1.) You're not performing the programming correctly.

Or

2.) Someone used the limited number of sessions(I think 3) on their own fobs, and then returned the Dorman products.

Ah, yes the 3 time and it’s disabled programmers. Very plausible!

The FCC numbers do HAVE to match. It is embossed on the back of the fob. In Canada it has whatever they call it instead of FCC. KOBGT04A is correct for HHR.

Distance is related to battery power. Either the fob battery or the RCDLR electrical connection. You might check the fuse on the BCM marked "RDO" #23.

It is my understanding that the key FOB for the HHR are not user programmable. You need a locksmith with a scan tool and will be ripped off for somewhere in the $30 range for each FOB.

Or you can buy a scanner now , capable of fob setting and alcohol percentages resets, under $200.00

Or, as this entire thread is about get the Dorman programming module. They are "user programmable" with a $50 investment.

OR, pony up and pay the locksmith, and once completed, forget about it.
