The comments from the autobloggers are funny as hell ...check out the first 5 replies. . I have to admit, i was one of those kinda leary of 4 cyl. turbo motors, but there have been many improvements in the past few years compared to the 80-90's technology. With gas prices skyrocketing, turbo 4, 6, and 8 cylinder gas AND desiel are gonna be the next big thing.

 

 

All too many just think of the Camaro as a race car. The gearheads like that are a joke. What if you want an attractive car to just drive? Do you really NEED a 550 hp engine to go the the store for a six pack? You may WANT a 550 hp engine, but do you NEED 550 hp? Gas as it approches $3.50 a gallon is not what I want to put into a 15 gallon tank @ 15 mpg.

Diesel is over $4 a gallon around here and if GM does go diesel, I hope it is better that the 350CI diesel they put out in the 80s. I hope it gets some decent mileage too, but I doubt it. I don't see the benefit of a diesel powered car that gets only 30 mpg for a decent gas powered car can get that today.

I saw the new Camaro on the Hot Rod Power Tour in 07, I'm sure GM will make a cheap replica of the car that was on the tour, to sell to the general public. Camaros aren't my thing today.

 

Old Lar, the benefit of diesel would be the strong low end torque they produce. Check out some of the turbo diesels in various suvs out there now. Cadillac,GM, honda, toyota, ford, chrysler are all working on and coming out with turbo 4&6 gas/diesel engines. The american govt. is demanding a much better fuel efficiency ratings from the car manufacturers, so cars like the new hemi challenger , camaros and mustangs (which make me drool ) will be shortlived or in very limited supply. So it looks likes we will be getting all sorts of smaller yet more powerful engines with hopefully very good gas mileage.

And I own an LS1 V8 Camaro.

 

I had a 80 Mustang with the 2.3 turbo 4 banger in it and I drove that thing hard for years without problems. In fact, I had over 150k on the dial before I rebuilt the engine cause I thought it was getting tired. Boy that was a fun car.

I'd like to see the new Camaro with some engine choices not just a hi-po V8

 

They're better off with the high-output V6 from the CTS. The turbo 4 may have the horsepower, but the lower torque combined with the tiny package in the engine compartment is going to turn people off. This car is just too big for a four pot engine.

Sadly, the last time a four banger was offered was 1985. The Iron Duke.

my thoughts exactly. The added weight will not help mileage but hurt. The HHRSS gets what 29MPG, the last Z28 got 28MPG (both highway of course). And that was with a V8. You want to increase the mileage, put a good DI V6 in it. That turbo will have to work hard in that.

 

The SS 4 cylinder makes more power than the retarded V6's they used to throw in Camaros & Firebirds.
