Radio and dash lights can have two things that can happen. The dimmer can be down and you just need to turn it up. Also remeber the HHR has auto lights that can come on in the daytime under over passes and other dark places like garages.
Often it will come on under a bridge and when you drive out into the sun the radio dial and DIC will be hard to see in the sun as it has dimmed down. Once the lights go off they will return.
I had this happen when I got the car and then realized it was the headlight being on that dimmed the dash to the point the radio was hard to see.

re
johnboy - i did try covering it with my hand but nothing i should try tape but havent done that yet - i may just have to live with it if its too deep in the dash - i'm not pulling the radio and fishing in the dash just for that - if for some other reason i need to get in the dash i'll look around but its not that a big of a deal just annoying - just a strange quirk and i thought i might be missing some trick since i'm not familiar with the HHR yet - the priority right now is more HP - i can always plug in my MP3 - i can see that

I really miss my aircraft landing lights I had in the high beams in my 68 Chevelle SS. On a cool night you could feel the warmth from them at 8 feet. THey had a range of over a mile.
If someone would not take off their high beams one flash and they would back off. I still have them but no longer own a car they will bolt in.

light and fogs
I'm sorry that moving the interior trim light didn't fix your problem, it did for mine.
The fogs in these cars are particularly useful. Right now, with my passenger side light knocked out of aim by a crash, they serve as a useful substitute so I can see where the right side of my vehicle is at night. HHR goes into a REAL dealer body shop on Tuesday to repair the repair the previous shop got wrong, and so that problem should become moot.
