There seems to be room on the dash and behind it for a cut down Wrangler grab bar. When I get a chance, I'll try and take the glove box out and see if I can get back there. Definitely ordering the arm rest.

Although I have looked around and can't find a replacement part number, my 2001 Chevy S-10 crew cab had a real nice handle above the door on the passenger side. They of course come in colors to match the interiors (mine was gray). See what a Chevy parts guy can do for you. Hope this was a help.

I know you all probably thought of this, but it is worth mentioning anyway that you need to think about airbag (side and front) locations and deployment in regard to where you mount these. At least the first place i thought of would have been "bad" in regard to bag deployment

front airbag seems to be well above where I'm thinking of a grab bar. No side airbags to deal with on mine.

I was considering a grab bar in the roof similar to what my S-10 has, but considering what Chevy just went through with additional absorption materials in the recent headliner recall, a grab handle up there throws that effort out the window! I'd like one since my father has trouble getting in our HHR even with it being lowered. Don't have the side airbags but that would be a very intrusive object to hit in an accident.

Just a thought:

Won't your passenger rip the handle out of the dash or headliner when pulling themselves into the car?

Don't you need to bolt or weld braces behind the intended location in order to mount a handle securely, like you would when installing a safety/assist bar in a bathtub?

I had the same thought.

Actually, I thought of that after I posted. you would need to exercise some real caution installing something. You certainly don't want to drill into the airbag system, and you wouldn't want something blocking an airbag and becoming a deadly projectile. My wife complains about the lack of some type of grab bar. My driving doesn't bother me, although I did race around in fire trucks for 28 years. I'm probably used to s*%tty driving.

I agree, this doesn't seem to be a good idea.

Same agreement here.
