That is an excellent point!! Over the years I have seen people do some bizarre things and most happen when they don't plan thoroughly or rush the job. In one case (which I still laugh about) someone wanted to mount a display panel on a shop floor. Instead of using mounts that were already there they wanted holes in a different spot. Ok, I can understand that but what I have a problem with is that some people never look inside to see what they are going to drill into??? I guess they assume it is all empty back there. In my example the person drilled a hole in the case and right into a PCB. To add insult to injury the drill was too small and they rotated the drill around on an angle to make the hole bigger. That damaged more stuff by ripping chips, caps, resistors, etc right off the board inside the device! Trashed a $2000 board.

So, before drilling or making any mods like that plan, plan, plan ahead. It would also be a good idea to review the factory service books and also take the area apart to understand what you may be doing before any mods are done.

Thinking outside the box here...

A little too wide for the HHR I think. I'm tempted to cut one down...

Don't you need to bolt or weld braces behind the intended location in order to mount a handle securely, like you would when installing a safety/assist bar in a bathtub?
My thought was to run a piece of wood behind the grab bar and some washers. The idea is not to have an OH MY GOD WE"RE GOING TO CRASH kind of grab bar, just something for high speed turns and other cases of passenger instability.

What will you use to keep the wood connected to the body?

Don't most passengers grad a bar because their subconscious has told them to brace for a crash?

That's OK. The splinters will help buffer the impact.
