So I am going to drop the pan tomorrow and see what it looks like. Is it true that there is no gasket for the oil pan? Seems like you use RTV or Silicone.

Took a couple weeks to get back to this. So I decided to check on the oil pump before I dropped the pan. As soon as I took off the crank pulley I saw the problem. Can you see it?

So I removed the lower timing cover to find what I had feared. The oil pump self destructed. Worse yet, there are pieces unaccounted for. Now the pan must come off. It even damaged the cover so luckily I bought a whole replacement cover. I think the crank pulley is also scarred but it may still work.

That can happen, if the balancer and the oil pump aren't lined up when you put them back together after a timing chain change!

I am not sure how you can do that wrong. The balance has flats on each side that engage with the oil pump in the cover. Once engaged, you rotate the balancer (and oil pump) until it aligns with the key on the crank and then slide it in the rest of the way and bolt it down. At least I think that is the only way.

Somebody in the past did not line up the the balancer, just bolted it on, disregarding the torque specs.

Clean out the oil sump pick up and pan!
