Problems with the SS

I noticed the other week that the SS wasn't running quite as strong as it had been. I was only getting 17 pounds of boost with the stage 1 upgrade. It finally threw a code on the way home from work. DTC 2178.
I took it to a dealer near me to get it checked out and they wound up replacing the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler. When I took it out for a test drive, it pulled pretty good and then lost all boost. If you shut it off and restart it, it will have boost for a while until you push it hard.
Now they are telling me that it needs a turbo actuator and that there are none anywhere in the country. I'm not to confident that they know what they are doing.

stay tuned

Stay on it cause the Performance Division as we know it is probably going bye-bye. Once that happens no one will really have the correct answers. We are starting to see that now at dealers levels-getting the proper answer. This forum is probably the best place for real help.

Hold the horses Hoss.

The performance divison is going no where. They will remain but will not be incharge of tuning production cars. Many of these people will be tuning the cars at the production level since they are now in the car programs at the start. They will tune the new platforms while they are being designed not after they were already on sale.

As for the engine they had nothing to do with the LNF engine. THe powertrain people did and they are not going anywhere.

There is already a TSB on this and it is a problem you hear about but not something that happens to all SS.

The bottom line is GMPD is still around and have nothing to do with this issue. Any issue that may arise with th HHR will be delt with in the future and your warranties will not be effected with the new GM.

Right now we are seeing the biggest issue as there are some parts shortages as few vendors wanted to send parts to GM till after they filed bankruptcy as they did not want to not get paid. Once this clears the courts the parts should start flowing again soon.

I am sure if the dealer tried hard enough they could get a replacment part from Spinghill where this part is installed on the engine. I had a hard to get part and the dealer got it directly from the vendor when GM had none. Some dealers try harder than others or know how to work the system better.

P2178 Code

Service Manual has many things to look at for that code: Most likely ones are:

• Check vacuum hoses for splits, kinks, and improper connections
• The air intake duct for being collapsed or restricted
• Leaks in the air induction system between the turbocharger outlet and the throttle body inlet, including the charge air cooler
• The air filter for being dirty or restricted
• Check the evaporative emissions control system for improper operation
• Missing, loose, or leaking exhaust components from the HO2S forward--Refer to Symptoms - Engine Exhaust.
• A restricted exhaust system

I have been waiting on same part since 05/05/09! Mine was "patched" into working condition by dealer until new one is delivered.

Isin't this the same code I was having I believe so its the same stupid MAF sensor reading...I just said "F" it and hooked up the H/P Tuners to it and let it roll...now I'm back at 22-24PSI. H/P Tuners is the shiznit. I'm getting home soon and probably going to get my Haltech installed and then the Turbo...

Well it's been over a month now and still no resolution to the problem. So far they have changed out the piping between the turbo outlet and the intercooler, twice, the turbo actuator and now the entire turbo assembly. It is still losing boost. I have had a case number with GM customer service for over three weeks now. They have been in contact with me every week but this is now getting rediculous. The dealer has been in constant contact with GM tech, but I don't thing anyone knows what they are doing. I'm a pretty patient person but that is running thin at this point.

Well, I finally got the SS back the other day. It has a new turbo, and all new piping. seems to be running good so far. Hopefully it keeps running good. The plastic piping they put on these things is junk.
