Question

I accidentally got in a race the other day, and noticed that the top speed is set at 110 mph. I was in normal driving mode. I was wondering if I put the car in competative mode does that cancel out the governor. If not then what do I need to do?

Accidently? Is that possible with an SS?

I didn't think that the SS's govenor was set that low. I took a trip last year and was driving throught Wyoming and got mine to 120+ before my wife told me to slow down.

Maybe yours has one set that other's don't?

An SS? They are limited at 155.

But....will a SS run 155mph? I had mine to to 130, but decided that was plenty,as the, and hiway was a little rough, plus I was on my way to a funeral, and did'nt want to make it a double. "Moon"

You need to shift out of 2nd gear!

The SS is not limited based on what I have seen GM published in the press.

GM claims 155 MPH tops speed under good conditions and that is just where the SS runs out of steam. I would expect the Auto to be a little less MPH. I think the Aero limits it more than anything as this shape is not good for that kind of speeds.

GM usally limits cars only if the tires are not speed rated to deal with it.

If you stop at 110 MPH something may be amiss.

You would know if you hit the cut off, you will loose all power suddenly and it feels like something is wrong. Some cars have a gas cut off or a rev limiter type deal.

Dunno. You might not want to try either, but 110 is no effort at all.

Is your SS auto or manual? If auto, were you driving with the shifter in "I" instead of "D"? If you have an auto and had the shifter in "I" that sounds about right since the top (recommended) speed to drive in that gear is 80mph. If you were doing 110 and staying there then the tranny was maxed out in that gear and that's not good for the tranny! If you have a manual then I've no clue, maybe try shifting??

I wonder if the PCM will do a forced upshift if you are in I. Maybe Hyper knows. Given the power, I don't think 155 is out of the question. My 04 GTO with 350 hp and 600lbs more would pull it off.

But I agree that the SS aerodynamics might be only slightly better than a Fiero and mine is no fun over about 120. hell, my 86 TR was no fun over 100!
