SS is on my list of new cars
Definitely worth checking it out IMO. I was going back and forth for about 5 days on whether to get the SS or the xB. That's how close I think they are to each other. And again, the only reason, and I mean the only reason the SS won was because of the power it had.
Daily driver - 60 miles each way through the Atlanta Death March and get ~28 mpg using 93 octane.
SS would have the rear cargo space to hold your big mut, and you could stuff the wiener on the floor just fine. Price/Performance, leg room and comfort made this car a buy and I never had serious issues owning 4 chevys now (silverado, hhr ss, iroc z, and a s10).
That 25.9k is just the sticker price - you can haggle down to 21.9k for fully loaded auto. The auto is only 30 hp lower than the manual and lacks the LSD. Buying certified used at the same price is just throwing cash out the window for a vehicle with some 30k-45k miles on it.

I hate to say this, but the Subaru quality and reliability is likely closer to a Tahoe or Silverado or Denali than an HHR. The SS is a blast to drive, but I think we are willing to put up with the compromises that were made to make this an affordable performance car, and you might be disappointed. Just understand exactly what you are buying. Just my humble opinion of course.

I just sold a 2004 WRX for my SS. I really like the SS, and am very happy with it, but I will be surprised if it matches the reliability of my Subaru. 50000 miles of hard driving and I only changed my oil, wiper blades and tires, 0 issues. I have already had a couple of minor issues with the SS in less than 1000 miles (mostly fit and finish). The 100K warranty is reassuring and the MPG is unmatched in ANY car with this combo of scoot and utility. The handling is also in another league from the new forester. But If you want more room, an auto trans, and are willing to give up 5 MPG, the new turbo forester looks very nice. I would take it over an auto SS(no offense to any auto owners). Test drove the Speed3 and it was very fast. Too much torque steer and too small, also got about 3 MPG worse than the SS.
