Stupid... Drag racing
Police need a court order to destroy the cars. They must prove that the serial or identification numbers on a vehicle or its parts are removed, altered or destroyed.
Did they stop the other car? If not I would get a lawyer and fight this. Being a former MI Police Officer I will tell you that if you plead guilty or are convicted you will now have a criminal record. If you look at the yellow stripe on the bottom of the ticket you will see that it says Misdemeanor Copy. This was a citiation in lew of arrest. Without the testimony of the other driver you may very well get a careless driving reduction with is not a criminal offense. Be prepared to pay a little cash for the lawyer, but a bad driving record is much better than a criminal record.
Did you admit guilt to the officer? If so you are pretty much screwed, but a reduction in charges is not out of the question especially if you have a good driving record over the last few years.
Well at least you have seemed to learn something from your momentary lapse of judgement.

You could also call the courts and see about getting the court date changed, lots of times if you tell them you can make it, and need to re-schedule, the officer will not show up the 2nd time, and you can it it dropped or a redution in points and cost at the very least.
With the problems in California they have had with drag racing they have had to take drastic measures.
People today don't have a lick of sense and not only killing themselves but bystanders too.
The lack of tracks in So Cal has not helped.
In the past most people would take this kind of action to an open road out in the country or a track. Now they make runs right in town in traffic.
They also gather is large groups and draw attention to it. Not smart.
Like it or not each car caught does one of two things. Sends a message and gets one more car that will never race again.
If they would use a little smarts the action could go on and often the cops look the other way. I even have had cops tell me where I could run my Chevelle SS because they never patroled there.
The reason I get mad is the idiots make the rest of us look bad. Even if we are out in the country where the cops would let us be now they have to enforce the law.
I don't like this kind of law but with the lack of personel responsibility anymore I can't blaime them for going this extreme.
They had one bust with over 200 cars if I recall in La Mesa a few years ago. I was out their when it happened and it even made the paper here in Ohio when I got back.
What I fear is if it keeps up they will not just crush the cars but make it illegal to modify them. Not only would that effect my hobby but the way I make my living wokring for a large racing company.
SEMA is already fighting this kind of action already. Bills are created in many states monthly to do just that.
FYI: I am not condmding the HHR and Cobalt action as it sounded like they may have been in a area where it was somewhat controled.

Driving a car that's fast... there's always temptation if ur kind of a competitive guy like alot of us are. Someone's always over in that next lane, possibly wanting to goad you into doing something that could be dangerous and fun at best, but personally and financially devastating at worst.
Just the other day in my 98 Z28, I took off at an intersection not cuz I was interested in racing but just in a hurry like usual and the next car over just happened to be a late model mustang gt. Well he wasn't about to let me leave the intersection so fast without a battle so he guns it up to WOT and is gone in an instant. I just let 'im go... Those are the times when you need to tell yourself, "not worth it."
I woulda smoked him anyway!

Well, at lunch today a Cobalt SS pulled up next to me and revved his engine. I took the bait.
Good news is that I beat him, bad news is that the police where sitting in a gas station near the intersection and chased down the winner, me
I immediately pulled over and 2 officers ran up to my car and told me to exit and put my hands on the roof.
Yep, they arrested me
Searched me, cuffed me, put me in the back of the squad car while they looked up my info and wrote out a ticket.
I know, it was stupid!
They released me after scaring the $#!!% out of me.
Now, I have a mandatory court date
These cars are REALLY fun to drive, BUT keep it off the streets!!

While I was sitting in their squad car, they both went up and looked inside of the car, they pointed to the turbo boost gauge and laughed. I think they were shocked that an HHR could do what it did!

Plead with the Judge to get tit reduced to reckless or exhibition of speed. Both are better charges considering.
Been here and done this but only once.
