timing chain question

timing chain question

Appears from reading many posts on this site , that the timing chain replacement is necessary or a good idea at around 100 k for the 2 liter turbbo engines . Im in my 70 ,s & have never replaced a timing chain with many cars with well over 100 k . Im pretty sure the P. Owner
said he had replaced it & I got it at 123k -- Just wondering since these cars are new to me .

I also have a LS 2.2 liter I just picked up for work travel to keep the miles off my SS . Is the timing chain something that needs to be replaced in these as well .

My opinion is , it can’t hurt! Were as some will let it go, and some have gone over 215,000 miles and still no problem.
It’s up to you, it’ll make you sleep better!
I’m in my mid 60’s , and still can change a timing and balance shaft chain set in about 3 to 4 hours.

The Ecotechs are known for having chain issues at some point. The mileage where it happens seems to vary a lot. They don't break (unless you ignore the loud rattling they eventually get), but between stretching and the tensioner going bad, you do have the risk of it jumping teeth (mainly on the exhaust cam it seems.)

Specifically for the LNF 2.0L engine, from my experience and reading others symptoms on various forums, you usually get a warning - either a rough idle usually accompanied with a P0016 or P0017 code and/or a rattling sound coming from the timing chain front cover area. What you don't want it a substantial tooth jump since these are interference engines. If either of those happen shut it off and don't start it until the chain/guides/tensioner are replaced.

So, do you do it as preventative maintenance? Sure. Mine got the rough idle and P0017 at 91k miles. I saw two on here that had it at 60-70k miles. Others were up at 120k+ and as Oldblue said, some got to 200k+. If the previous owner replaced it, you probably have a lot of life left on the chain, guides and tensioner. Cloyes made the original parts for the LNF and claim they improved some things over the years.

Did the previous owner mention if they changed the balancer chain/guides and gears too? It's a good idea to just do them together since you are right there.

This is something you watch for but don't get all paranoid about it. Try and find out the miles when it was changed and if the balancer parts were replaced too. It's just good to know. As Oldblue said, it's not hard. I am 66 and just did mine. I do have the luxury of a good selection of tools and have the balancer tool to loosening/tightening the crank bolt but with a long breaker bar, you can do it without the tool. When I am my 70's? We will see! I hope to be wrenching in my 70's but I am also a realist. :)

The balance shaft chain is behind the timing chain and 75 % of the timing chains I’ve changed in these are because of the front guide bolt breaking, I always install an upper guide bolt , Dorman has them now , but it was this guy I used to get mine from

Thanks to both of you for this great info --Ive wrote to p o on when the chain was replaced & did he replace the ,guide , bolt (like in the video) etc.

Thing that is bothering me is the clicking , chattering sound in the engine -- not that bad , bbut noticeable -- someone told me ,it was the fuel in jecters , but I didnt think fuel injecters made a clicking sound ?

This must bbe most common in theLnf turbbo engines --I had a 06 LT a few years bback & had no issues with this whatsoever --sold it with 230k - still running strong

The LNF turbo engine has direct injection and the high pressure fuel pump does make a clicking noise.

Yes, the HPFP does make a lot of noise. And my opinion is the LNF injectors are noisier than the ones in the 2.2, 2.4 engines. Reason being is they operate at much higher pressures with the DI. At pressures sometimes as high as 2200 psi they need some stronger "innards" to open and close.
