No, that’s normal even for other manufacturers, not just Chevy

Do you have a link for the tool you bought? I'd like to check it out.

Google EL-50448. Pick anyone you are comfortable ordering, Amazon or EBay

but read compatibly notes carefully, it is not compatible with a 2009 or older HHR

I skimmed through my owner's manual. I'll just do the "air-out" method that it explains therein. That shouldn't be hard to do.

(in hindsight, I guess I should have just looked at the manual in the first place)

From section 5 page 66 of the 2009 owners manual

Apparently the relearn procedure doesn’t use the tool!

As far as I know the EL50448 "works" but not "required" on all years HHR that have TPMS. The sensors are the same part number.

You never said if you had driven a few miles after the rotation.

Yes, that is the excerpt I uncovered last hour in my owner's manual. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I have driven the car for about 4 days now. The sensors still report incorrect data though. So I'm going to relearn them with the "air out" method shown in the owner's manual. All the years of owning this car and I never realized I was supposed to relearn the sensors, every time I rotated tires. ~shoulder shrug~

Who knew! I personally dislike the idea a battery operated sensor tells the RDLC to tell the BCM if that tire has enough air! I usually check air pressure in my tires every Saturday morning, just a habit! Been doing that since I got my license, 52 years ago.
But I see the safety aspect of the system for the general public , who spend more time trying to cover that warning light than actually check why it’s lit!
My nephew, the fire fighter, nice young man , but a little on the stubborn side put a piece of electrical tape over the light in his Dodge Ram pick’em up truck, I picked up the truck for a brake job , a set of shocks and oil and filter. After I rotated the tires and checked pressure, followed the directions in the owners manual and relearned the sensors positions. The piece of tape was bugging me so I removed it, the warning light was out. So I asked him about that tape, he said he had put the tires on in different locations and that light came on. He didn’t bother trying to figure out why, he just stuck the tape over it!

What is dumb about the design? It works and doesn't cost a couple hundred dollars and complies with the Federal law. Poor owner has to do something involving maintenance.
