I bet your new tires are W or Y rated as well. Z is "over 149 mph" and W is 168MPH. Look at the load number stamped on the tire. It should be something like 91W. And unless you had some strange OEM tire, you had a Z+W rated tire on that car stock. The lowest speed rating I saw available in the 225/45/18 size when I recently replaced mine was a V rated tire(149). The rest were W or Y speed rating.

There aren't too many places in NJ to get up to top speed, with poor pavement, cops and traffic being deterrents. Unfortunately I don't think I've ever gotten over 100 MPH. But I sure get up to 80 MPH in a hurry.

My GPS logged at 198kph once when I 'tested' it out on a straightaway.
(123 mph)

It felt surprisingly very stable and still had room to accelerate compared to my 80's V8 Trans Am I used to own. The front end wasn't skittish like every other car I've owned.

I only did it once and don't plan on doing it again. Getting caught I'd lose the car along with my license going 118 over the speed limit.

Re speed ratings... the values are for "extended use" at a given speed. Running an H-rated tire to 131 mph doesn't immediately cause it to asplode. But it will not be capable of dealing with the heat generated by those speeds, and will quickly deteriorate (quickly as compared to driving UNDER the rated speed).

The full _current_ ratings are as follows--

Code mph km/h
A1 3 5
A2 6 10
A3 9 15
A4 12 20
A5 16 25
A6 19 30
A7 22 35
A8 25 40
B 31 50
C 37 60
D 40 65
E 43 70
F 50 80
G 56 90
J 62 100
K 68 110
L 75 120
M 81 130
N 87 140
P 94 150
Q 100 160
R 106 170
S 112 180
T 118 190
U 124 200
H 130 210
V 149 240
Z over 149 over 240
W 168 270
G(W) over 168 over 270
Y 186 300
(Y) over 186 over 300

Some manufacturers still use the outdated "ZR" (roughly equivalent to the current Z rating).

/2 cents.
