Trailering

Anyone know why you can't tow with an SS? I believe I read somewhere that wasn't allowed.
I can kind of see that with a stick because they probably are worried about clutch wear, but why the Auto?
I'm waiting on a stick (Tomorrow?), but have a small tent trailer I tow with a Goldwing and would sure like the use of it. Weighs maybe 500 lbs. loaded down. Doesn't make sense to me I can pull it with a Motorcycle, but not a much more powerful car. Suspension maybe?

Probably not going to be much of a problem towing 500 lbs, as I bet the motorcycle isn't rated to tow either. :) The problem with towing much with a turbo is however, is that it makes it run under boost(more heat) all the time due to the increased load, kinda like going up a hill, watch your boost guage if you hold a steady speed going up that hill. Only thing with towing, its like going up a hill all the time.

General Follow-Up Question here.
Does GM care if I put a hitch on my HHR SS on my own? Does that void my warranty or anything like that? I'd like to have one for those "just in case" situations, or even for a hitch-mounted-bike-rack.

Anyone know the official word on that?

Since there are hitch mounted luggage boxes, and like you say, bike racks, I don't believe they can say much, unless of course you have cooked the transmission or overheated the engine. The "official word" is it depends on your dealer. I broke 3rd gear syncro on my Z06, and the dealer never questioned anything but fixed it under warranty no prob. My dealer sells cat back exhaust and other goodies, where other dealers would rant, rave, and attempt to not cover warranty on such equipped cars.

Something else to consider, with the current hitches available out there, whether it would clear the lower valance panel on the SS when mounted????

With the amount of clearance on mine, I would say yes easily.
