I've been reading thru the site for a couple of days now and there seems to be a wealth of information available to consume and I look forward to interacting with other HHR owners in the days to come as I will have a few questions regarding some upgrades I plan to make in the future.
The car was given to me by my parents whom bought it new and since I am a mechanic I have done all the maintenance and repairs on it over the years. There have been no major problems, just the routine water leaks from sunroof drains being clogged and out of place water deflector in the cowl.
Changed out the Cam Solenoids a few years ago because of a code.
I did replace the front struts but it never did get rid of the clunk. After perusing this site I now know to check the front bumper since the sway bar links appeared to be good the last time I checked them, so thanks for that!
Over all the car is in good shape for having around 215,000 miles.
Has a few minor cosmetic issues such as a small dent where someone backed into it at the gas station and clear coat peeling off of rear bumper but it is mechanically sound.
Timing chain has started to rattle on first start up after sitting overnight sometimes so I will probably be replacing the chain, tensioner, and guides at some point in the near future as well as the water pump since I'll be in there.
The upgrades I plan on making include replacing the factory radio with a Sony WX-GS920BH as well as the door speakers with some Polk DB652's. That's the set up I have them in my other vehicles and have been well pleased by them.
I am thinking about adding a sub and amp as well in the factory location in the rear quarter panel. Going to have to research that a bit.
Will also be adding extra 12v power outlets for things like GPS, Dash Cams, and other accessories, as well as a couple of USB ports for charging cell phones.
Maybe an alternator upgrade to help with the added electrical load.
Also looking to upgrade the lighting, both interior and exterior, just not sure with what yet as far as exterior lighting.
I want LED's for park/tail/stop/turn signal lights but I hate running load resistors as I feel it negates some of the biggest benefits of using LED's, mainly less heat and electrical load.
Possibly some brake and tire upgrades for better stopping.
Not really planning on doing any major engine or suspension upgrades at this time but who knows what the future holds.
