Water Pump / Timing Chain

Once again, I’m looking for advice.
2010, 2.2 engine, 123,500 miles
Water pump needs replacing so I’m getting estimates.
Does the timing chain need to be replaced at the same time?
Most of the shops say to replace the timing chain. A couple said replacement isn’t necessary if there’s nothing wrong with it.
Whats the right answer? Thanks for any help.

At that mileage change the timing chain, and balance shaft chain.
as Mr. Callahan asked, “ Do you feel lucky, well, do ya?”

RockAuto has the Cloyes full kit at a great price, don’t forget to use the discount code!!

If you have the proper tools, you do not even remove timing chain cover to change out the water pump, sounds like your mechanic may be pumping you for more money or does not know about the tool (Lisle 13800 Water Pump Sprocket Holder For GM Ecotec). However they may be reffering to your mileage, it might be worth changing the timing chain based on mileage, but nothing to do with water pump. I just did mine a few weeks ago. I went with the cloyes timing chain kit that OldBlue suggested off rockauto, I also got a felpro front covergasket with crank seal, felpro valve cover gasket and balance chain kit. I had to go to the dealership to get the camshaft gear bolts and the crankshaft bolt, these bolts are TTY, one time use. i probably spent $250 in parts. I really dont like mechanics working on my car, I want to know that everything was properly torqued.

I’m replacing the timing chain when they do the water pump. The place I trust recommenced it based on mileage.
Thanks for the advice. I‘m playing it safe this time.
