Hello from Southeast Texas

Hello, all,

I suddenly found myself in the market for a car last week when my '99 Saturn was rear ended and sandwiched on the Houston freeway. Actually, I'd been thinking that it was time to let it go anyway, having 180,000 miles on the original clutch, motor mounts starting to go, etc., but 5 minutes before the wreck I said to myself that I'd wait until next spring. Guess I wasn't supposed to wait!

Anyway, I had seen an '06 HHR LS online earlier in the day at a Chevy dealer I've bought from before, and they are having a deal with my credit union that involves getting a $500 gas card. I went down the next day and drove a Saturn Ion (AWFUL! What a waste of a followup to the S-series... no wonder they never recovered), and the HHR. I liked the ride, liked the utility, and the "cool factor" (just enough to be cool, not enough to be conspicuous (depending on whether I mod it a bunch)). Got it for $6800, and it has about 79K miles. I get the gas card when they give me my plates in the next few days.

Of course, it begs for modifications, so I found you guys and plan to get lots of advice here.

I've already ordered WeatherTech window deflectors (had some on the Saturn) so I don't have to leave the windows up all day parked outside. (Hate having to run outside when a sudden shower pops up!). I also ordered some blue decals to cover the gold bowties, and a '49 Chevy Truck style "Chevrolet" logo. I'm planning to replace the satin grill with a chrome one.

And so it begins! Hope it serves me as well as the Saturn did. I had that car 7 years and 134,000 miles (had 46 when I got it), and the most expensive non-maintenance repair was the radiator fan at about $120 including labor. (Brakes cost more than that!)

-Alan

Thumbs up

Welcome & Congrats...

My wife bought new a '98 saturn & it was a great lil ride too. The only thing I had to do to it @ 100K miles was replace the starter.. (besides the normal tire rotations, & services).. We finally sold it for a BMW Z-3

Enjoy your HHR

Hey, Judge, I grew up in Groves — PN-G class of '78! My parents still live in the house on Gulf Avenue that they built in 1958.
