Loaded question. I would say make it yours. What some think is real cool, others wont. There are lots of things you can do. Look through some of the things others have done. You will know what you like.
Do you want it to look better? Run better? Sound better? Stop better? Sound system? Tire/wheels? Paint? ....

I would say to start with something that makes it stand out and says that it's yours. For instance one of the first things I did was to paint my grill so that I stood out from all the rest of the Sandstone HHR's around here. Customizing a car is a lot of personal taste, just take your time and plan out what you want the car to say about you and you'll be fine.
