Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone! I'm still trying to learn how to use this site. My car gave me a little scare last night, when I was trying to leave a store. I went to put it in drive and it seemed stuck in park. Panic almost ensued. But I jiggled the shifter a bit & tried again, and that worked. I'm absolutely terrified of getting stranded some where, so I hope it never does that to me. Does anyone know if this is a warning sign of some sort? I ran my VIN # and saw that my car hasn't had any of the recalls performed on it. I plan to have that taken care of soon. (Not that any of them have anything to do with the shifter, that I'm aware of).

Welcome to the site HHR Amy.

When you go to shift it out of Park, do you hear a CLICK as you step on the brake, and prepare to shift it out of Park? Oh, some new owners don't realize that you have to be pressing on the brake in order to shift - not sure if you were aware, so thought I'd better mention it.

Here is a link (courtesy of the Search Tool at the top of the page) that explains how the shifter mechanism works - it's a pretty good read - https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/prob...-sticks-37727/)

Thanks, Whopper. I do apply the brake before attempting to shift, but I haven't really listened for a click. If there is one, it must not be very obvious or it's what I perceive as being a "normal" car sound. I'll try to pay closer attention the next time I'm shifting into gear.
For now, I'm going to read the link you suggested.

Yes, Whopper, I do hear the click. I hear it when I press the brakes and also when I depress the button on the shifter. From what I read in the link you provided, this is what I should be hearing, correct?
Thanks again for the link(s). It's nice to know the mechanics of what's going on. :)
