This is a very cool piece of history from 1963. Some of you are old enough you may actually have been there. I was fortunate enough to have an older brother who drove me to it, and later earned my own checkered flag at an amateur event at Riverside. Now it is a housing tract. List how many of these guys you can identify. Youngsters will enjoy this too.

Wow! What a blast from the past, really cool even if it was before my time. I miss Riverside but like Ontario it was a victim of progress and falling attendance. So many great drivers in that race...McDonald, Ward, Penske, Hall, Rodriguez, Ginther, Clark, Thompson, and Jimmy Clark. Thanks so much for posting this.

I recognize a lot of those racers. 1963 was a good year for SCCA racing. Mid-engine designs were just coming into their own. The Cobra / Corvette war was just starting. Went to a lot of SoCal tracks back in the late 60's / early 70's. Unfortunately, Riverside wasn't one of them. My loss. I hear some stories though from my brother-in-law,who raced regional SCCA and Trans-Am during the mid 60's.

 

Thanks for the post... In 63 I was a kid who was just starting an interest in racing cars, so I know of all these guys and the cars but being from the eastern US I was not going to real races but was racing the Aurora HO versions shortly after this.

The late 50's to the early 70's were the heyday of racing IMHO.

Rules did not stop innovation. The cars were just about as different in design and engineering as the drivers and these guys were men with guts. Not the stuffed shirts we have today.
