Hi all, Just a quick question regarding drag racing classes of the late 60's. I have figured out that my classic car would have been denoted as D/SA . D would be the class S for stock A for automatic. My question then would be if it was a manual transmission would it have been D/SM for manual or D/SS for stick shift?..Just curious and can't seem to find a answer . Thanks

 

These were what I ran in way back in 1971, as you can see there were differences for stick heads or aftermarket heads, automatic or manual transmission

I am probably not asking the right way. I'm wondering when they marked on the windshield or hand painted on the body D/SA what would the markings be for a manual car ? I'll try to find a pic to post as a example.

 

I know the 665 is just the drivers choice and I know the D means the class it falls into and the SA means stock automatic ..I'm curious how a manual transmission would be marked? just with a M?

Super Stock automatic. My 1970 class was S/S that was a Super Stock with a 4speed manual

 

First of all I think the various sanctioning bodies, NHRA, IHRA,etc may have had slightly different, overlapping, designations and they all changed as cars progressed.

As far as the auto vs manual question... As far as I know the "A" was added to the normal class designation for auto cars. A manual car was normal so it had no extra letter added... So D/SA or D/S. Gotta remember back in the 60's the auto was just getting started and most of them weren't very good. That's why the added class. 4-speed's ruled.

 

That would be D stock automatic.D/SA
D stock was D/S.

Use to help with a Gas car which was the an altered in different clothes. Injection was the norm.
B/G was the call letters for this car. Cubic inch to weight was the factor for this class.
In that class, when it was made, not many ran an automatic, if any.
Except for clutch-flights. Lol.
So there wasn't an A after B/G. That would have been B/GA.
A normally ment Altered like, B/A or C/A ect.
