The truth is Kammback comes from the work of German aerodynamics engineer Wunibald Kamm. He was one of the first to apply aerodynamics to automobile in any great way.
He bound cars that were tapered to the rear and had a cut off flat end flowed better through the air. In other words he found less drag. The kind of work he did was applies to many of the race cars in the 60's like the 250 GTO Coupe and Cobra Coupe.
While many cars later world wide would claim the Kammback name many use a some of his work and some used very little.
The HHR to be honest has on thing he found as if you look down on the top the the HHR the front of the cab space is wider than the rear. This taper effect is used much today on many cars.
While it is not a true 100% Kammback it enjoys a little of his work. While the term Kammback is not really an American Idea or name it was only first used here with the Gremlin and Vega. Both called Kammbacks but both lack a little of his full work and aero work. Europe embraced his designs back in the 50's and 60's and can be seen on many sport models and race cars.

The truth is it was classified as a truck as it counts as Truck CAFE mileage.
In reality it is a Cobalt wagon but buy making it look like a SUV they can count it in their truck corporate average.
Chrysler did the same with the PT if it had 4 doors but the convertible was counted as a car.
This is why all the companies are now pushing small CUV models as most qualify as a Truck CAFE rating.
It is just that simple.
