I wouldn't say he was 'getting away with' anything.
He gets convicted of a malicious mischief charge (which probably won't look real good to the Bar Association) and he'll have to pay full restitution to the individuals and/or insurance companies who sustained damages. For once, the system worked, thanks to the enterprising operators of the parking garage. Hey, hat tip to them. They even sacrificed one of their own cars to get the guy.
