GM Dealership Oil Change Special?
I ask my dealer why there was such a big difference in price between an oil change with conventional oil verses synthetic oil one time. His answer was this - "We buy and stock conventional oil (especially 5w30) in bulk quantity. We have to order the synthetic in smaller quantities and find a place to store it. They also had to keep the used synthetic oil separated from the used conventional oil." The last part did not make sense to me seeing as when I watched them do oil changes they drained all of the used oil into the same waste container. I then asked him what the price of an oil change would be if "I" brought in my own synthetic oil instead of using theirs. He replied that they would still charge me the full price for an oil change with conventional oil. So I would still be paying for their oil that they would have never put in my vehicle. Just does not make a lot of sense - just another way of getting more money out of people.
Well, here in Virginia I just purchased 5 Qts Valvoline full Synthetic AND a filter for $27.99 from AdvanceAuto. If I remember correctly I saw a local "oil change special" Synthetic only about $12 more than dino. I did get that RIDICULOUS offer from the GM dealer. The real reason for price difference is that people who understand oil do not change synthetic as often as dino. Please, no flame. Syn just does lasts longer, if not forever as it was originally advertised back in the dark ages (I am old, and still have a memory).
And why pay for a tire rotation? Almost everybody around here includes that plus re-balance in the price of the tires. In my case I rotate my own because I cannot afford the 3 hours the shop wants to do the 20 minute job.

I bet that in Mexico 20w-50 is the recommended, because of the ambient temperatures (above 70 F. most of the time). You would not need light weight oil for start-up except in verrry rare times. The 5W refers to start-up, the 50 refers to operating temps (yes, I know that is simplistic, more involved......).
& what are they putting in for oil, recycled ?
Sometimes cheep costs more in the long run.
