Home computer problem

Last week I got a boot up issue on my home system. It's an eMachine T5234. The boot error states a problem with file: \boot\bcd and the status is: 0xc000000f. Wants the original windows CD to make repairs. Well, this system did not come with any disks, everything preloaded and the windows system is partitioned on a seperate drive (D). Warranty of course ran out in Dec 08 . I did get the recovery DVD's and unfortunately, they only option to reformat back to original. As you can guess, do'nt want to go that way if at all possible....

I can boot it up now with the DVD's they sent me, hitting F8 during boot up (vista) I get the boot options, but none are stated for "repair". There has got to be some way to fix this error without a full factory restore.

Any help would be great appreciated....

If I have to basically start over, I'm thinking just get a new HD and if possible XP software, but would just buy VIsta if I can't find XP anymore. THen I would put the old HD in a IDE to USB encloure I already have and then I can at least transfer my files back verses doing a extremely long multi disk backup. Granted, I could use the restore disks, but that also installs all the crap I don't really need.

Option, all would be good. THe disks I got are recovery, not vista. Apparently they do not give you a vista installation disk. Now I have though about just buying a copy of vista and see what they did. But would hate to spend the $$$ only for it to tell it it has to format first.

I'll add this in cast it helps. When I boot up using the recovery disk, I get two options.

Boot using disk or
Boot to HD

If I boot using the disk, i only get the option to restore system to factory specs. Full format.

If I boot to HD, then I get a somewhat normal boot up. Once up, everything works as normal.

Download the vista recovery disk .iso from here and burn it to CD or DVD:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBC...r+from+the+DVD

Now you can use the Vista repair tools to rebuild the BCD as mentioned in the link stephenm gave.

Can't get the file do download form some reason. I'll have to try it again at home. But those instructions look promising. Plus two seperate scenario's. I'll start with the Easy BDC first.

Ah, didn't realize it was a bit torrent file. If you don't have a torrent program, you'll have to install it or find someone who can download it for you. I'd download it for you but I don't have a place large enough to host it.

If you search a bit you can probably find a direct download without using the torrent. I found one from a dutch forum...it may or may not be in english. lol

Found the solution.

http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBC...r+with+EasyBCD

Step one did the fix. If you have VIsta or XP, I highly recommend this download. SO easy, even a caveman could do it. Too bad the experts at Microsoft and Gateway won't tell you how simple the fix is.....

You will need to download http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 to use the program. I would say it took less than a minute to download, run the fix, and the reboot......
