Homeowners Rate Hikes

We're getting hit particularly hard here in Florida. My renewal premium tripled even though the value of my home only increased 10%. I've lived here almost 16 years through 4 hurricanes and never made a claim. They charged me $244 to bail out the state ins co that covers those idiots who live on the waterfront!

I have an appointment with my agent tomorrow to discuss options to lower the amount. I'll be sure to ask how he plans to spend all his increased commissions. That trip to a National Meet might be on hold indefinitly along with Christmas!

Sorry to hear you are forced to pay for others coverage.

Best option: MOVE!

Mine went from $750/yr last yr to $1450/yr this yr. I live in a county that had 3 hurricanes go thru here and we are now paying for it big time. I am not even sure of the name of the company I have it changes so much.

Mine went from $500 to $1200 about three years ago when they went to the separate hurricane wind coverage and now this.

Karen, I have State Farm also. Be prepared! The big problem is I have to come up with this additional money by Feb 1st. State Farm applied for a 75% rate increase. Why would mine triple?

I would imagine after what Florida went through the past two seasons, caused it to become more of a high risk area. I would also imagine flood also became mandatory.

Here in SW Florida mine went from $975 to $2200, plus my flood went from $242 to $567!

No claims and a three year old home that was built with all the new Hurricane code specs.

That's $230.58/month and about $20 less than what I pay for my HHR monthly!

My cousin, which lives in Miami, just had her policy skyrocket from $5400 to $12,340.

She will be paying more monthly for her Homeowner's & Flood insurance than her mortgage!

Well, raising the hurricane deductible from 2% to 3% lowered the premium down to about $2,500. I also found out from my agent that rates skyrocketed here because we've been exempt from the building codes implemented after Hurricane Andrew. They wouldn't have applied to my home anyway because of it's age.

While there are many high-paying jobs in Florida, most of us don't make more than in other states. The housing costs and insurance are absolutely killing us. Don't even consider retiring here. You can't survive on a fixed income!

My deductible is already $8,000.00. I could not raise that much if I had a claim if I tried. I only pay insureance because I HAVE to, I don't think it would help unless I had a total loss and then they would try and prove it was caused by something NOT covered.

The little guy keeps getting screwed.........
