How Much did Gas Cost When You Started Driving?
Way back then, when we lived by candlelight and hitched up the horse to go down......Sorry mind kinda went somewhere.....back in '82-83 it averaged about $1.20 a gallon. Then it did drop to less than a dollar by the summer of '86, I think the cheapest it hit back then in these parts was 89 cents a gallon.
I am with Goetslyd. Though, in lansing MI two years ago there was a station that had a 2 day promo where gas was 99cents. This was also right close to elections, so you see how it got so low. It was low because it was close to election, then it was that promo.. had people from probably a 20 square mile area coming to get fuel there.
Guess I'm going to show my age here. When I first started driving gas $.25 a gallon. I remember a gas war in town where gas got down to $.17. I was a sacker at Krogers and didn't have enough money to fill my car up. WOW, how times have changed.
When I first started driving? About 35-45 cents I guess (long time ago, don't expect me to remember
High School in the 70's..... Nobody remembers anything)..... I do remember paying 25 cents for Sunoco 260 for the mini bike though. That was on the old "dial your own octane" pumps
I too remember .25 cent gas and gas wars between stations. I also remember earning .65 cents an hour before taxes, that was until I joined the Navy and made $80.00 or so a month. Compared to other consumables that we use I think gas is still a bargain. Let's also not forget what kind of mileage you could expect back then, even with a straight six with a one barrel carb.
price of gas
as I rember it was about 12 cents a gallon could turn in Coke bottles for 2 cents a bottle didnt take much to go to the beach, went in the Army had the choice to stay in the army or the air force pay was $65.oo a month.
