What happened to your move to Boston? Got to tell you, the two areas you live in or are considering (Boston - Chicago) are a couple of the pricest markets in the US.
I live in an area where a nice house costs $40-50,000 and in twenty years you can have it paid off. Sure, we don't make as much, but I can tell you that you'll be further ahead and get stuck in traffic jambs less often.
I'm 58 years old and looking back, would't have changed much in my life. I drove through Sarasota Fla. couple of years ago where the starting price of a "house" was $299,000. If two kids were making $12 an hour, both working, how would they make that payment? Here, that $40,000 is a $400 a month payment plus taxes of maybe $125 a month. Easy life, (alright rotten Winter weather if you don't like snow), but you've got that already in Chicago and Boston.
And what I'm talking about can be had in many, many small towns in America, from New York, to Pennsylvania, to West Virginia to wherever.

Ur right its overpriced as hell. Here 200K is avg IF u live within 45mins of the city of chicago. If ur willing to drive a extra 30-40mins from the city u can get a decent house for 130's+ That is cheap here. Taxes are 3k+ Most people are paying 5-7K avg. For what ****ty Roads, Crap Gov't etc.

i actually prefer renting :)... neighbors piss ya off.. move.... tired of the same house... move.... dont have to buy all the repairs to the house... call the land lord to fix it... its really mad expencive to own a house... not just in payments but maintenance expences... a roof costs 5-10K dollars to repair, gutters, drywall, carpet, water heater, appliances.. you name it... if it breaks you buy it again and again.. not to mention if the house has a basement and it starts leaking OH MAN theres 15-20K if they have to dig up and rebuild, not to mention now you have to pay property taxes
rent as long as you can, enjoy being young, and LIVE LIFE MAN!!!!! cause just like pink floyd said, 10 years have got behind you, and blam where'd it all go ~_~

I bought my house with no money down FHA Loan 112,000 house, 3 bedroom 2.5 car garage, finished basement. Im only 25 was 24 when i bought the house. So its no so bad out there just have to be firm with the seller and Realtor.But most housing prices in Ohio are FTW.

With FHA now you need 3% Down.

My wife and I paid for a wedding at 21 and 20, while we had a two year old and she was in college. Not to mention that neither of us was making more than 10.00 per hour because we didnt have educations or experiance yet. A few years (and some hard work) later we bought a three bedroom house in really nice area with 0.00 down payment. After about 5 years or so of hard times finishing college while raising kids, we are starting to see the light at the end of hard times tunnel, and we already have cars, house, fun stuff etc..
Just be patient and enjoy the rides. There will be hard days, but those hard days have reward down the road
