Immigration problem
Probably because they realize it's pointless. If your country's economy sucks why not go to a place with a better economy where you are pretty much guaranteed a better paying job doing something Americans feel they are too good to do or just plain don't want to do. Like pick fruit, dig ditches, and crap like that.
The vast majority do not follow that stereotype, particularly in the city.
Not many agricultural jobs around here. Not many jobs "Americans" won`t do here either. I`d cut grass if I had to, but that`s taken, I`d be a laborer, but that`s taken.
Fact is, over time, I`ve been on jobs where the Superviser isn`t America born, I`d take that, but it`s taken.

And Captain, maybe it's just here, but the illegal alien who stand on streets here (the so-called day laborer) know exactly what the market will pay for a given job....try getting an illegal to do dry wall install for less than $12-15 an hour, concrete labor for less than $10/hr, finisher for less than $14/hr. Just regular yard clean-up is $10/hr. Now, that's not a lot of money but IT IS NOT LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE. Hell even the restaurants pay, at least minimum, for dish washers, etc. I heard this is done so the employers cannot be charged for ANYTHING. At one time very low wages were paid and when the establishment was "raided" by ICE, or whoever, they didn't charge the restaurant with anything because it was not illegal to hire an illegal. But then, the government said, GOTCHA, paying less than Federal Minimum Wage Law. And charged some with that.
You know though, although this is a good thread. It will go nowhere and resolve nothing.....other than, as you suggested, allow some to vent.
The only illegal immigrant around here that I know of are a bunch of Mexicans that pick apples in the next county over and a group of Hondurans that do landscaping for a un-named local landscaping company. I don't think we have many illegal immigrants around here.
We have tons of immigrants but I believe they are legal for the most part. Not said in a racist way but my area is a big freaking rainbow of people.
I think where I work there is at least one person if not two from every country. Which brings me back on my personal pet peeve of immigrants not speaking English. Every day I end up talking to someone where there is a huge communication barrier. I can't learn every language so I can properly communicate with everyone around here so we should all speak a common language which I feel should be English.
Now that I've became a purchasing agent I have to call companies around the world and thing that surprises me is everyone I call speaks English. They always answer the phone in their own language but as soon as they hear me speak English they switch right over to English. Granted some of the accents are really heavy and the English is a little broken but if I can get that from other counties why can't I get it here in America.

I won't even talk about how I feel in my neighborhood. I don't live in the fancy part of town and like I said before, Providence has a HUGE immigrant population. You should see the looks and treatment my wife and I get, largely in part because we aren't Hispanic. We we have come to loath however, is when people pick and choose when they want to "identify" with us. Its hey, "we're both brown, right" one minute, then they call us monkeys the next. Pisses me off...especially as you say it with your Dominican flag flying high out of the window.
Yes, that is correct about the economy. But why not work to change and correct it. By the way, where does all the money go that IS SPENT in Mexico. Isn't it somewhat strange that an "upper class" President takes office at about $100,000/yr. And leaves office several HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS richer. You think our political system is corrupt, dirty, self serving, you should try doing serious business with the Mexico "system".
alot of them do riot but alot of those riots are put down by the army, and those guys pretty much only answer to the president of mexico, so alot of ppl somehow get killed accidentaly, dissapear, or get hurt badly..remmeber its not the same as here where a rioter will get a slap on the hand and a night in jail...
you know the irony is... the "wetbacks" in mexico (ppl from other contries who are worse off than mex) actually go and protest the government (these are the laborers and the ones who live in mud houses with dirt floors or in a cardboard box) and what happenes? they get treated just as bad as the "wetbacks" here in america... wierd huh
Coming to America
All of my grandparents came from other countries {one German, one Canadian French, two Italian.}, came here legally, got work, learned English and became citizens. Became AMERICANS . If you don't want to learn English, then you don't want to be American! My grandparents were proud to be Americans and were happy to learn ENGLISH so they could be productive members of our society. If people want to come here legally and become AMERICANS,WELCOME . And If you can't speak ENGLISH you shouldn't be able to vote.
Not meant to offend, just my humble opinion !

Personally, I think this is a very valuable thread. We're hearing a lot of different things than what the national news is reporting. We all know the USA is a giant melting pot and we all expect immigration. It's great to hear about traditions and family activities from those who grew up elsewhere. Also, illegal immigration is a totally different problem in urban areas compared to rural/farm areas.
But I have to tell you I no longer go to Wal-Mart alone at night due to the large volume of non-english speaking males found there. The ratio of men to women is about 10 to 1. Yes, that's at a grocery/discount store! I don't feel safe because of the communication gap. So I chose safety over the freedoms I earned by being born in this country.
