My mother had it done in May of this year....total replacement...she was very aggressive in her rehab and was walking without help very quickly..all at 79 years old! Problem is she is weaned off the pain meds and she has discomfort and swelling in the knee still...need to have it drained about once a month....doctors can' find anything causing the fluid buildup and says everything looks clean in the joints etc.....they may have to go in again and do an arthro if swelling persists

My mother had both knees done back in July and she was doing really well while she was in rehab and doing her PT and on pain meds, but she quit doing PT as much as she was supposed to and still has a lot of pain although she is able to walk well.

In the last 10 years I have had 3 knee surgeries and my Doc says I have arthritis in both knees. I guess it is only a matter of time for me to get replacement knees. Talking to my Doc he says some people really struggle with replacement's wright after and some recover quickly, No real reason why.

Good luck.

"Tireman" Two new knees at 39! Ouch. If you don't mind answering, what happened to them? Just curious.

I had orthoscopic surgery for a meniscus tear and to remove a spur on the growth plate in 1995. At 37, they told me I needed a total knee replacement due to arthritis but I was too young. This year they tried injecting Synvasc to relieve the pain but it didn't give much relief. On the x-ray, you could hardly see any separation between the bones.

I'd love to have the knee replacement but I can't find a doctor who will do it. At 51, I struggle more to walk than my 76-year-old father does.

I can understand that...... i had a head on collision that drove my left leg through my back...... and i had to wait 7 years for the total hip replacement.. due to my age... and since i was only 49 when i got it replaced they didnt cement it... i had to let the bone grow and attach to the replacement....i used a walker for 9 weeks.

my uncles knee replacement has helped him alot, dont know all the details but it put some pep in his step. I feel everyones pain, i was in a car crash a month ago. Fractures in my foot, dislocated ankle, fractured knee cap, and a titanium rod in my leg to repair my broken femur.

I had my right knee done, everything short of replacement. Had the joint cleaned and a pad placed in, also had a meniscus tear repair, and since the acl was badly torn, I now had part of my hamstring for an acl. still hopeing in time to have both knees done by the VA hospital, but like others have to wait. I have arthritis in both knees from military service, and because of limping so bad for years, I now have 5 disc going in my lower back and arthritis there also.

Dad had a total knee replacement done in June. Was golfing again in September. He is a very young 81. Was very aggressive with the rehab. The more walking the better. My uncle (71 ) had his done same time and he still can't walk! They also are noiw thinking they cut some muscle by mistake. He was not in great shape to start with, but the odd thing is a woman did his surgery, and we have been hearing (not meant to be sexist) that they aren't as good doing the replacement thing. You have to really pound the thing into the bone and they aren't strong enough to do it properly!
A cousin had an old knee replacement replaced in January... he originally had it done 12 years ago at 45... Back then they were still using plastic and they don't last as long. The new stuff is a lot better, and he is more mobile now than he was before the first one. Key is plenty of walking and excercise, from what I have been told whether it is the knee or a hip.

I had a total knee replacement 7 Years ago but it wasn't too successful because I had to have the kneecap on that knee removed 30 or so years ago. I had torn that kneecap loose in a freak accident when I was about 11 or 12 and nothing was ever done to fix it then. (I'm talking 1945 or so, I don't know if they could fix stuff like that back then) It continued to be a problem for years until I had to have the kneecap removed. Then I got Arthritis so bad I had to go for the replacement. I found out then that they use your own kneecap when they do this, and mine was long gone. Now I really have no strength in that leg. Just enough to get around is all. And there's one spot that feels like they've got a tendon in there that is pinched and from time to time it swells up and hurts like hell. I definitely don't look forward to ever having the other knee done I'll tell you!!

This is kinda like the rebuilt corner of people. Am I the only one with an arm part that was replaced? Mine was due to a fall at work, 6 surgeries later and I am the $200,000.00 man.....
