HD Knuckleheads 1936-1947

recorded history (Harley history, that is.. Here is the Earliest 1936 Knucklehead known to exist. Vin # 36EL1002, meaning this is #2 made. & History tells us that #1 was dismantled by HD & parts were used elsewhere...

This was on an ebay auction, back in 2005 & bidding was nearing $246,000.00
& suddenly ended. Now it is in the HD museum in Milwaukee..

ride worthy (of it's weight in gold) Was a barn-find basketcase, bought for $20,000.00 & patiently restored.. This is one of the hardest Harleys to restore, since 1936 was first year & it had numerous changes during production run.. So finding the Very earliest parts are like finding hen's teeth

candidate indeed !! HD at that time did not realize the significance of this first dual OHV V-twin.. This became the standard in which Harleys were built like till 2000...

edit: Since HD learned the hard way, now they keep every #1 off the line.

Indian remained behind with it's Big Flathead till 1953, then closed it's doors..
