NASCAR: Toyota falling on its face?

Out of curiosity, I checked the starting lineup for today's Nextel Cup race at Vegas and, well, I kinda think Toyota went into this NASCAR thing waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay half-****ed. If you look at the starting grid, you will see all of TWO Toyotas: Dave Blaney (qualified pretty well) and Dale Jarrett (using the Champion's Provisional). There are EIGHT Toyotas watching the race from the garage this week, including Jeremy Mayfield (for the third straight race) and Toyota poster-boy Michael Waltrip, not to mention this is the second race that the entirety of Team Red Bull failed to qualify.

Anyone else enjoying this debacle on wheels as much as I am?

Looks like Toyota's foray into NASCAR is even worse than their foray into Formula 1.

How long did it take yota to be competitive in the truck series?

I'm sure it's not going to be a bed of roses for Toyota. However, if memory serves me right, the Dodges didn't do so hot their first year back in the series either.

This race leaves alot to be desired. The new track configuration and hard tires is wrecking havoc on alot of the drivers. Plus...it doesn't help that the committment cone is too close to the entrance to pit road, thus causing an excessive amount of speeding penalties. Add the 13 gallon fuel cells into the mix meaning more pit stops. I'm sure all the drivers will be glad when this race is over.

This is true, it took them until the August Michigan race to finally win (and that took a rain-induced red flag for Sterling Marlin), but at least the Dodges in 2001 were qualifying! They were also staying right around the front of the pack, with Marlin leading the charge. Toyota thus far this season has been a non-factor in any of the races, the closest they've been is I believe Allmendinger getting a Top Ten finish at Fontana. I mean sure, Blaney today got wrecked out, but Jarrett is still running and hasn't been able to break out of the 30's.

Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe Toyota has more focused on their C.O.T. program than on the old body style, and they might start improving at the C.O.T. races.
