The passing of a giant...
David E. Davis Jr. passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 80. If you've ever read Road and Track, Car & Driver, or Automobile Magazine you are familiar with his work. He also brought us the "Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet" ad campaign in the 70's.

Yeah, was kinda shocked when I saw that. Didn't realize he was ill. Haven't read much of his recent work, but I was reading everything of his from the 70's through the 90's.....his words will live on, thankfully.
Just last month he discussed adjusting to life as a cancer patient in his Car & Driver column, he was undergoing chemo and radiation but seemed to be very positive about his prognosis. He'll be missed for sure, the really great automotive writers have just about all passed on now.
Just yesterday I read Jean (Lindamood) Jenning's somewhat rambling "tribute" to DED Jr. in this month's 25th anniversary issue of Automobile. I guess he was quite a character, but not someone I would have wanted to EVER work for. Still and all, C&D, Automobile, and even Motor Trend - what a career, and what a Car Guy. He will be missed by us readers, if not by the seemingly hundreds of people he fired over the years. It will be interesting to see what Jean writes with his passing.
