Pro Gun or Anti Gun
I respect your opionion and willingness to post in this thread.
To me it's part of Freedom to choose, if you choose not to have a gun, not comfortable with them, don't own one. I'm not a criminal, why deny my choice to own a gun. I'm no danger to you, even if I lived next door to you.

Despite Al Bore's assertion that the Constitution is a living breathing document, it is not.....this protection is in place so that it is not convenient for whoever may be in charge at a certain time to tailor it to meet their views.
Having a firearm is like having a fire extingusher...hope you never have to use it but be damn glad you have it when needed.

There's always a danger when a gun is in a house(or a vehicle) for it to be used in a moment of anger or panic without thought of the consequences of it's usage-just grab it and fire away. That's wrong. Also wrong is the idea that an assault weapon is an acceptable firearm for the citizenry. There's no way that one of those is meant for self defense or sport shooting. Those are only meant for killing and support for their ownership is indefensible.
Canada and most European countries prohibit general gun ownership by the citizenry while having difficult to obtain permits for hunters and gun collectors.Unfortunately that would never work here because of the ingrained gun culture.Modifying the 2nd Amendment would be as unworkable as was Prohibition.Too many guns out there and too much temptation to hide them should a ban enacted.

So by your logic we should not allow knives, baseball bats, cars or pencils. I have seen the results of all of those things getting used in anger and used to kill.
Until I can be guaranteed that a bad guy will not have an assault weapon I feel that people should have the right to have one as well. Lets keep the playing field even here or in favor of the good guys.
You certainly have your right to form your own opinions, I am just throwing out the otherside of the argument. Which happens to be my opinion.

The primary intent of a bat, car, pencil,or knife is not to kill. That IS the intent of an assault rifle-not sport shooting or self defense. There is no justification for a private citizen to own one of those.
It's so sad that so many people feel that there's danger lurking around every corner and need to defend themselves to the nth degree against some unseen enemy. The old Buffalo Springfield song "For What It's Worth" put it so sadly correct-"Paranoia strikes deep.Into your life it will creep."Those mental demons will get you every time.

Look at Switzerland. Every household is issued a Sig 550 or 510 assault rifle as part of the mandatory militia training laws. They have one of the lowest murder rates in the world and very little gun violence to speak of. They can also afford to be neutral because you'd have to be crazy to try and invade Switzerland with the Alps and a fully armed and trained populace.
As far as certain firearms "designed for killing", every firearm is designed for killing. True, you can use shotguns for shooting clays and target pistols for exhibition shooting, but that's not what they were designed for. Firearms are designed for efficiency in killing for sport or defense. An AR-15 is a very accurate and efficient rifle for shooting game and won't wear a groove into your shoulder. A Remington 870 is at home both in the Crown Vic and skeet range.
BTW, I'm a criminal defense lawyer in one of the most gun-rich areas of the country. In the last year I have had multiple cases of assaults with bats, razors, cars, and fists, but not one with a firearm. I've had a lot of probation violations with felons carrying firearms, mostly hunting, but no assaults.

Never forget Guns don't kill people, People kill people! A gun is an instrument used by a person to kill, but the same person who would kill with a gun would kill with their hands or any other instrument they needed to do the job. I believe that as long as there are people that will kill or do harm, any citizen should have the right to have whatever it takes to defend themselves from a threat no matter how unlikely it is to occur.

I think in the 15 years I've owned the pistol, I went to get it out of fear for my personal safety one time. If I didn't have the gun, I would have grabbed a walking stick (weapon) I keep by the door. The gun lets me stand off a bit more and I like my chances better.
