Question Regarding Illegal Immigrants

Our local paper, the Northwest Florida Daily News, just wrote a week long series on illegal immigrants. You can read the articles at http://www.nwfdailynews.com/togetherApart/. This is a major issue down here with the need for construction workers to repair hurricane damage. It's also bankrupting our social services.

The question I have for all of you is whether I can sell my minivan to one of them legally. I'm driving it with a sign that says "For Sale." They like vans because they can haul a whole crew of workers to a job site. I just don't know if it's legal to do so. I really don't want to sell it to an illegal alien but don't know if I can demand proof that they are a US citizen. Also, if they don't properly insure and register the vehicle, can I be liable for any injuries or damage they may cause?

Personally I would do it. Money is money regardless of who it comes from. As long as they are willing to sign the title and so forth. Once the vehicle was no longer titled to me and out of my possession I could car less what happens to it. The person could go on a cracked out killing rampage in the vehicle for all I care as long as I'm paid and it's not in my name.

It's not your job to check on immigration status, and as far as a private sale goes, you can't ask. That would be discrimination. And the world goes 'round in circles..............

yes make them sign the title and date it in front of you (maybe even photo copy it for your possesion!!)if they lied about their identity or forged a fake name i dont think you can be held acountable for what they do with it then!

Yeah, you document everything on your end, date of sale, how much, who to, how many mi., etc;. then go on with your life.
What the buyer does isn`t your concern. Could enter a demolition derby...

Just call the local sheriffs office with that question, or the tax office.
My 2cents worth.

I have never bought a used car, so I thought that the tags would go with the car. I know at a Dealer they give you the paper tags, so what does a private person give, if not the tag?

You have to get your own plates. You can also get a temporary just for transport if I remember correctly. I have a couple of buddies that pick cars up from auctions and sell them on the side. They have dealer plates under their name.

I had never thought of that, never had a need to. Thanks for clearing it up.
