Being in Florida, just go to the tax collectors website and download the form indicating that you've sold it. I did that when I sold the Oldsmobile and it removes your liability for the vehicle - even if they do not properly register it. The form is at http://www3.hsmv.state.fl.us/Intrane.../BTR/82050.pdf and there is no charge to file.
Make a Bill of Sale and be sure the buyer fills out their portion. Have a witness or better yet, notary sign also. Fill out the seller's section of the title. Remove tags and take them to the DMV.
This way, buyer has a bill of sale to show they bought it if they get pulled over for no tags. SInce you filled out your section of the title, it shows you sold it (buyer could be buying it for someone so they do not have to fill out their part until it's tagged). Turning in the old tags clears you of the liability with them. Keep receipt!!!!!
Your good to go.

Either way, I would just so the VIN is not attached to my name anymore.
